Sun shines on 31st Games and special birthday celebration

Drumtochty Highland Games defied the odds and enjoyed one of its hottest and best attended days since it was founded in 1976. Just as Charlie Anderson, the Chieftain, handed over the Heavyweight Championship to Bruce Robb, Rosyth at 5.30pm the rain started but Drumtochty had triumphed.
The Novice Heavies started the event at 11am with a closely fought competition with Jason McLeod , Lochinver , just beating Craig Sinclair,Drumoak. The future of the heavies is assured with the performances of these fine young athletes.
Many games spectators are attracted by the massed pipe bands and at 1pm they were rewarded by the appearance of Brechin ,Towie ,Lonach ,Lathallan and Newtonhill Bands as they spectacularly opened the afternoon’s Programme under the direction of Ian Robb, Montrose.
This signalled the start of a very busy ring—highland dancing in the Walker’s of Aberlour Championship with some 120 competitors, light events in the Williamson and Dunn League contested by 10 athletes with Maurice Dillan, Black Isle, triumphing - the prestigious Glenfiddich Heavy Championship won by 1pt by Bruce Robb from local hero Bruce Aitken – Bruce Robb also broke the 56lb weight for height which had stood since 2002.—Elgin won a hard pull in the final against arch rivals Moffat in the Trinity International Tug O War—solo piping originally encouraged by the Fife stalward Walter Drysdale and sponsored by John Milne, Auctioneers, produced three worthy winners Ailsa Sutherland ,Kirriemuir (under 14) Faye Henderson, Kirriemuir (under 18) Fraser Maitland ,Stonehaven ( adult)
Interspersed with all the main events the many children royally entertained the crowd in a variety of competitions
The Drum Majors’ mace competition introduced by Bob Forsyth at Oldmeldrum some years ago always produces a lot of fun and the sure hands of Bill Barclay lifted the trophy.
At 2pm Charlie and Dot Anderson , the owners of Drumtochty Castle, arrived on a horse drawn carriage to officially open the Games. The Anderson Family had come back from Canada to celebrate Charlie’s 50th birthday In his opening remarks he said “ You have to leave Scotland sometimes to appreciate that it is such a beautiful country when you come back”
In the evening the Castle shook to the dancing of some 200 guests to a fine mixture of country and western and scottish ceilidh music.
